This richly illustrated book presents the life and work of József Rippl-Rónai (1861-1927), a major figure in modern Hungarian painting. It traces his artistic development, from his formative years and his time in Paris to his mature work after returning to Hungary. During his Paris years, Rippl-Rónai encountered important currents in French modern art and developed close connections with artists associated with Symbolism and the Nabis, including Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard and Maurice Denis. These influences are reflected in his early paintings, with their decorative compositions, expressive contours and refined colour harmonies. Later, he increasingly portrayed everyday life in Hungary, including domestic interiors, portraits, gardens and figures from his immediate surroundings. The book's colour plates provide a broad visual overview of his distinctive style and changing artistic interests. The accompanying text by Judit Szabadi places his achievement within the development of Hungarian art at the turn of the twentieth century.
