This trilingual publication examines the development of social housing in Vienna, from the nineteenth century to the innovative housing experiments of the twentieth century. Among other things, the book covers middle-class housing, workers? housing and shelters for the homeless, the municipal housing policy of the interwar period, and the social infrastructure of so-called ?Red Vienna?. It also covers post-war reconstruction, criticism of monotonous, large-scale housing estates and alternative housing projects from the 1960s onwards. The wealth of historical documents, photographs, plans and diagrams makes this catalogue a valuable study of architecture, urban planning, social housing and social policy. The publication was produced to accompany the exhibition at the Hessenhuis in Antwerp as part of Europalia 87 Österreich.
