Two-part catalogue, with Select and Arrange joined together by a special accordion/butterfly-style binding. The catalogue was designed by Cornel Windlin and was commissioned by Vitra for its Home Collection. It was awarded the distinction of "Book of the Jury" in the 2005 Swiss competition for the Most Beautiful Swiss Books. Select, Arrange presents the Vitra Home Collection through an unusually conceived combination of product catalogue and visual design publication. The Select section presents individual pieces of furniture and accessories with their specifications (and the retail prices in 2005), while Arrange places the same design furniture in carefully constructed domestic settings. The catalogue features designs by major twentieth- and early twenty-first-century designers, including Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Jean Prouve, Verner Panton, Isamu Noguchi, Jasper Morrison, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Antonio Citterio and Frank O. Gehry. The publication is particularly interesting because its unusual physical design is an integral part of its content. Rather than functioning as a conventional furniture catalogue, the two sections approach Vitra's collection from complementary perspectives. Select isolates the individual objects and provides the practical information associated with them, whereas Arrange explores how furniture works within interiors and how different objects can be combined into spatial compositions. The result is both a detailed overview of Vitra's Home Collection and an imaginative document of contemporary interior and furniture design. The photography and graphic treatment give the catalogue an independent visual character, with contributions from several photographers and image-makers. Cornel Windlin's design was sufficiently distinctive to earn the catalogue the Swiss "Book of the Jury" distinction for 2005. Vitra is a Swiss furniture manufacturer founded in 1950 and internationally known for its collaboration with leading architects and designers. Its collection includes landmark furniture by designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Jean Prouve and Verner Panton, alongside work by later generations of designers. Vitra's catalogues have consequently also become important documents of twentieth- and twenty-first-century furniture history. Select, Arrange reflects this approach by combining product information with a carefully constructed visual presentation of the company's domestic design collection. Cornel Windlin, the Swiss graphic designer responsible for the catalogue's art direction and design, is known for his influential work in contemporary Swiss graphic design.
