North Korea certainly wouldn't come first on a general list of dream destinations. Nevertheless, the country exudes an eerie fascination. It is a mystery, an anonymous country isolated from the rest of the world. German photojournalist Julia Leeb travelled to North Korea with two friends in an attempt to better understand the country and its people. The resulting photographic book offers a compelling view of North Korean architecture, culture and society, combining images of spectacular public celebrations with quieter observations of everyday life. The photographs include the celebrations surrounding the 100th birthday of Kim Il Sung and the enormous Arirang synchronized performance, but also intimate scenes of ordinary people, families and daily activities. Julia Leeb is a German photojournalist and documentary photographer whose work focuses on countries and regions that are politically isolated, socially restricted or difficult for international observers to access. She has travelled extensively in regions including North Korea, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan and other areas affected by political conflict or authoritarian rule. Her photography combines documentary observation with a strong interest in architecture, social structures and the everyday lives of people living under exceptional political circumstances. North Korea: Anonymous Country was one of her major early photographic publications and established her reputation for documenting societies that are rarely represented through independent visual reportage. The book includes a foreword by the French artist JR and Niko Karasek.
