'Die Tunisreise. Aquarelle und Zeichnungen von August Macke' documents the legendary journey that August Macke undertook to Tunisia in April 1914, together with Paul Klee and Louis Moilliet. This short journey marked a decisive turning point in the development of modern painting. The publication brings together the watercolours and drawings Macke produced during this journey and demonstrates how the intense North African light, the vibrant colours and the architecture of Tunis, Sidi Bou Saïd, Hammamet and Kairouan radically transformed his artistic vision. The accompanying essays place the works within their historical and art-historical context and explain why the trip to Tunisia is regarded as one of the most significant moments in European modern art. August Macke (1887?1914) was one of the leading figures of German Expressionism and a member of the artists? group Der Blaue Reiter. His paintings are characterised by an exceptional sense of colour, clear compositions and an optimistic visual language. His trip to Tunisia in April 1914, together with Paul Klee and Louis Moilliet, marked the high point of his artistic development. A few months later, aged just 27, he was killed in action during the First World War. The art-historical contributions in this publication are by Günter Busch, former director of the Kunsthalle Bremen, and Walter Holzhausen, a specialist in the work of August Macke.
