This scholarly Festschrift is devoted entirely to the Marienschrein of Aachen Cathedral, a masterpiece of thirteenth-century Mosan metalwork. The various contributions examine the historical development of Marian devotion in Aachen, the evolution of the city's pilgrimage traditions and the artistic conception of the shrine itself. Particular attention is given to the architectural structure of the reliquary, its gilded reliefs, sculptural decoration, inscriptions, gemstones and enamel work. Several chapters focus on conservation and restoration, documenting the large-scale campaign that involved the cleaning, repair and stabilization of thousands of individual components before the shrine was returned to public display in 2000. Richly illustrated throughout, the volume serves as both a documentary record of the restoration project and an important reference work for the study of medieval religious art, cathedral treasuries and heritage conservation.
