This exhibition catalogue presents a comprehensive exploration of Byzantine visual culture and its theological, political and artistic meanings. The book is structured as a scholarly exhibition catalogue combining academic essays and detailed object documentation. It begins by situating Byzantine art within the broader historical framework of Late Antiquity and medieval Christianity, then moves into a focused analysis of the so-called ?image debate? (Iconoclasm) that defined theological and political discourse in Byzantium. A significant portion of the volume is dedicated to the interpretation of icons as mediators between the divine and the human, highlighting their liturgical, devotional and ideological functions. The catalogue then presents a series of catalogue entries on selected objects, including ivory panels, devotional diptychs, mosaics, reliquaries and painted icons, each contextualised with scholarly commentary. The interplay between visual representation, sacred authority and imperial ideology is the central analytical thread throughout the publication.
