Der Struwwelpeter is one of the most influential and controversial children's books of the nineteenth century. Written and illustrated by Heinrich Hoffmann, it presents a series of short, rhymed stories depicting children whose misbehavior leads to exaggerated and often shocking consequences. Combining moral instruction with grotesque humor and striking imagery, the book reflects contemporary ideas about discipline, childhood, and social order. Since its publication in 1845, Der Struwwelpeter has become a cornerstone of German children's literature and a subject of ongoing literary, psychological, and cultural debate. The book consists of a sequence of illustrated cautionary tales written in rhythmic verse, each focusing on a child who violates social or behavioral norms such as obedience, cleanliness, moderation, or self-control. Characters such as Struwwelpeter, Zappel-Philipp, Suppen-Kaspar, and Daumenlutscher embody specific forms of misconduct, and their stories culminate in drastic outcomes intended to serve as moral warnings. The visual component plays a central role, with vivid, caricatural illustrations reinforcing the didactic message through exaggeration and irony. The work combines pedagogical intent with elements of satire and dark humor, offering insight into nineteenth-century bourgeois attitudes toward child-rearing, morality, and social conformity. Heinrich Hoffmann (1809-1894) was a German physician, psychiatrist, writer, and illustrator born in Frankfurt am Main. He created Der Struwwelpeter as a Christmas gift for his young son, initially intending it as a private amusement. Following its publication, the book achieved immediate and lasting success, securing Hoffmann's place in literary history. Beyond his work as an author, Hoffmann was active as a medical professional and contributed to early psychiatric practice. His dual background in medicine and literature is often cited as a key factor in the distinctive tone and psychological intensity of Der Struwwelpeter.
