Katharina Sieverding (born 1944 in Prague) is a German artist renowned for her pioneering contributions to photography, video and large-format visual art. A former student of Joseph Beuys, she has addressed themes such as identity, history and social critique throughout her career, exhibiting internationally and influencing contemporary art discourse. This publication documents an exhibition and project by her held at the Casa di Goethe in Rome, where she engaged with the scientific legacy of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the concept of metamorphosis. Through a selection of around 150 objects drawn from Goethe's scientific archives, botanical studies, minerals and human and animal skulls, Sieverding creates an artistic dialogue between scientific inquiry and her own visual work. The essays and interview included in the volume explore themes of identity, individuality, society, and the technologization of man and nature, reflecting Sieverding's socially engaged artistic approach.
