The first sections deal with what Maurer calls 'The Age of the Fathers', the influential patristic period in which early Christian thinkers integrated Greek philosophy with Christian theology. Next, the rise of the 'Schoolmen' is discussed: the scholastic philosophers, their methods, discussions about faith and reason, logic, metaphysics, theology and ethics. The book also covers the period in which medieval philosophy transitioned to early modern traditions: the transition from medieval scholasticism to newer philosophical developments. Maurer discusses important philosophers, movements, and central themes such as epistemology, metaphysics, the relationship between faith and reason, scholastic method, and theological-philosophical debates within their historical context.
