The Picture Book of Symbols is a compendium of over a thousand visual motifs, encompassing symbols, pictographs, emblems, ideograms, signals, and designs drawn from cultures, mythologies, religious systems, astrology, and philosophy. The book is organized thematically (for example sections on astrology, mythology, signs and symbols) and presents each symbol with a visual rendering, often accompanied by brief caption or explanation (in many cases implicitly letting the image speak). The intention is as a visual reference and inspirational archive rather than a deeply analytical treatise: it functions as a pictorial ?archive? of symbolic forms for artists, designers, historians, and enthusiasts of semiotics. Many symbols are drawn from religious, astrological, cosmological, mythological, and folkloric traditions, arranged so that the reader may peruse visual analogies and thematic groupings.
