Schwarzarbeit (in two volumes) is a specialised pattern compendium for Chantilly bobbin lace. Volume 1 contains 33 and Volume 2 contains 69 pricking patterns printed on heavy A4 paper, each accompanied by enlarged diagrams and guidance for gimp thread movement when relevant. The patterns range in complexity from beginner to advanced, requiring anywhere from fewer than 30 up to approximately 250 pair movements. The layout thoughtfully allows easy photocopying, with borders around designs so sheets can be aligned seamlessly. The series is bilingual (German and English) and designed for lacemakers who wish to produce refined continuous Chantilly lace pieces. Ulrike Lohr (also known as Ulrike Lohr-Voelcker) is a German lacemaker, best known for her bilingual textbooks on bobbin lace, including Discover, Explore & Master Torchon and Der Anfang vom Ende (The Beginning of the End, 2000). She has published several pattern and technique manuals, often focusing on Chantilly and Torchon lace. Her works combine technical precision, clear diagrams, and practical accessibility for both advanced and amateur lacemakers. Her books have often appeared in limited editions and are now largely out of print or available secondhand.
