The book is richly illustrated with fifteenth-century wooducts. John of Hildesheim's wonder-filled account of the Christmas story and the adventure of the three Kings. He was the first to gather the many legends and traditions surrounding the medieval saints, Balthasar, Melchior and Jaspar into one book. Miss Freeman used a Middle English text of 1399 as her primary source. The illustrations are from a copy of the Strassburg edition, generally dated 1484.
