In this third volume of the multi?volume series Chartres. Schöpfungsbau und Ideenwelt im Herzen Europas, Roland?Halfen offers a richly illustrated and deeply researched study of the cathedral of Chartres, focusing specifically on its architecture and stained glass. He situates the building not only as a monumental Gothic edifice but as a spiritual and symbolic construction, tracing its roots from pre?Christian sanctuary, through the millennium building of Bishop Fulbert, the 1194 fire, and the rapid emergence of the new cathedral that became a paradigm of High Gothic architecture. The author analyses major architectural components ? for example the labyrinth embedded in the western nave floor, the West portal with its sculptural program, and the rose window of the west façade ? showing how they function together as a coherent spiritual pathway. At the same time, attention is paid to the stained?glass windows in their exceptional state of preservation and design quality, and how they integrate with the architectural space and spiritual program. Technical innovations of medieval building and glazing are also discussed, and the result is a synthesis of art history, architecture, theology and symbolic?spatial analysis. The work is aimed at both specialists in medieval art and architecture and interested readers who wish to understand how light, colour, form and meaning converge in one of Europe?s greatest cathedrals.
