The first specific attemt at describing and commenting upon the so-called drawing books, from wich young artists were supposed to learn. This is the revised English edition of the dissertation in Dutch (1979). The book consists of bibliographical descriptions of the drawing books and a commentary that demonstrates teh relations between the pictorial instruction and the contemporary art theory.
