Glass aficionados will find no shortage of substance in this impressive examination of the art form. Within the book are over 150 razor-sharp photographic reproductions, mostly of church windows. Brisac's text is scholarly and extensive, raising it above the stained glass picture book. A few caveats: the density of the text is in some ways frustrating, with the plates not always well-integrated with the text, and a dearth of illustrations for some windows described as key examples. Further, as the emphasis is on European glass, there is little regarding contemporary U.S. artisans, who have been important in revitalizing the craft. Nevertheless, well worth considering for academic and large public libraries. Elliott Swanson, Kitsap Regional Lib., Brem er ton, Wash. Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.
